Vehicle Description 1972 Pontiac GTO Numbers Matching and PHS Documented 400ci V8 Automatic Transmission Safe-T-Track Differential 95,000 Miles White W/ Black Interior 29 Factory Options! Current Owner Since 2011 In 1972, for a host of reasons, most notably the cost of insurance and the rising price of gasoline, GTO sales plummeted by 45% in 1972, to only 5,807 units, and only 3,284 of those where made with the 400ci/400 auto combination, making this particular year and model of GTO very collectible.
The 1972 GTO was no longer a stand-alone series but reverted back to being an option package on the Le Mans series, just like when it was first introduced back in 1964 and again in 1965, before becoming its own model in 1966.
And just as Elvis Presley's 1972 song Burning Love would be his last #1 hit.
The 1972 GTO would be the last year the GTO would be presented in Pontiac's classic muscle car A-body design before being redesigned into the Colonnade styling in 1973.
The 1972 GTO was very similar to the '71 version, but some of the subtle styling updates for the 72 GTO gave it a much more aggressive look and is often considered one of the best looking GTOs.
Features included deeply recessed grilles in place of the nearly flush bright mesh grilles of 1971, air extractors for the front fenders, and new exhaust splitters that expel the exhaust directly behind both rear wheels, just like the optional ones for the '64-'65 GTOs, instead of through the rear valance panel like the 1970-71 models.
The parking lamp bright trim was revised and the GTO decals were moved to the rear quarter panels.
Power Train This GTO comes with its original 400ci V-8 engine that is paired with its original Turbo 400 automatic transmission.
The transmission was rebuilt and has less than 2,000 miles on it.
Bringing up the rear is the original Safe-T-Track differential.
In 2018, the engine was pulled and a new timing chain and harmonic balancer were installed, along with all new gaskets and motor mounts.
At that time all non-functioning components (A/C and cruise control) were removed for ease of service and engine compartment overall appearance.
The A/C and cruise control components are available to go with the car.
A new brake master cylinder and vacuum booster were also installed, along with new hood hinges.
An all new exhaust system was installed with factory correct exhaust splitters.
Also, this car sports a Pontiac Unitized Ignition system (non-original), which was the first self-contained breakerless (electronic) distributor.
It was initially a mandatory option for the 455 HO engine, but partway through the '72 model year, they made it a regular production option, listed at $77.
The option boasted less maintenance required (no more points), improved spark plug life and poor weather starting along with increased spark voltage, making it an easy sell to customers'.
Exterior This GTO was cosmetically restored during the previous owner's tenure and presents well.
It is an older restoration and there are some cracks in the paint (see pictures).
The car was restored in its original cameo ivory white color.
The car came from the factory with vinyl side moldings to protect from door dings, but were removed somewhere along the way.
The black vinyl top ( a 1972 GTO option cordova top) was added in 2013 by Agostino's Vinyl Top Service in Mesa, AZ using a factory correct vinyl top bought from Legendary Auto Interiors.
Another 1972 GTO option, the D98 Rally Stripes (whale stripes) were also applied to give it that added pop! A '72 factory re-chromed bumper was installed along with GTO option V32 Rear Bumper Guards that give it a more luxury look and helps distinguish it from other '70-'72 GTOs who all share the same bumper.
Also, added was an original '70 or '71 Judge spoiler.
This is a real three piece factory produced Judge spoiler that was purchased and restored before being installed.
Pontiac intended to offer the D80 Deck Lid Spoiler (ducktail spoiler) as an option for the GTO in '72, but as luck would have it, the mold for the spoiler broke after only a few were made so they discontinued it.
Interior The interior on this car was originally saddle color (dark tan), but was changed by the previous owner.
The seat upholstery and carpet were replaced at that time and appear to be factory correct and in good shape.
A new factory correct headliner and sail panels were installed in 2012 by Sonny's Upholstery in Tempe, AZ.
All gauges work, but the clock is not functioning (may just be disconnected to save battery.
Never checked).
The in-dash radio/cassette player does not work, but a refurbished '72 factory option U57 Stereo 8-Track Player was installed along with two rear speakers (three vintage 8-track tapes go with vehicle).
The center console storage box is missing, but the glove compartment is in good shape.
Lights all work including the optional U25 Trunk Light! Chassis This GTO originally came with G70x14 White Letter tires, but now sports P235-60Rx15 BF Goodrich TA tires mounted on factory Rally II wheels.
A set of 15 Pontiac Honeycomb wheels (a 1972 GTO option) are available with the car.
They've been sand blasted but need paint.
All four shocks have been replaced with heavy duty gas filled shocks, and all four springs have been replaced.
Brake lines were bled when the new master cylinder was installed.
All four tires where recently balanced.
This GTO has been a pleasure to own.
It brings back memories of high school days and has allowed for social activities with fellow car enthusiasts at local car shows, even picking up some awards, but I don't drive it as much as I should and now someone else can enjoy this rare muscle car classic.
If you've made it this far, thank you for taking the time and interest.
Overall, this is a nice driver quality car with its original power train and is a blast to drive.
